Aim and Scope: The International Journal for Applied Ethics is an annual peer reviewed journal with a volume published in January of each year. At the IJAE we believe that the true significance of the philosophical study of ethics is borne by its bearing on real life issues. Thus, we look to publish high quality articles containing original research by the authors in any of the Applied Ethical fields including Business Ethics, Environmental Ethics, Ethics of Education, Ethics of Technology, Media Ethics, Medical Ethics, Research Ethics, and Ethical considerations in Social, Political, Legal, and Public Policy matters, etc.

Editorial Practices: Every submission to IJAE that is deemed to be suitable for publication in IJAE by the editorial team is sent to two reviewers. Neither the author nor the reviewers are aware of each others identities. If both reviewers recommend acceptance the paper is accepted. If one reviewer accepts but the other reviewer suggests revisions, or if both reviewers suggest revisions, the paper is sent back to the author(s) to make the suggested revisions. After revisions the same reviewers are sent the paper again for review and the same process applies again. If any one reviewer rejects the paper at any time the paper is rejected. We attempt to make our decision within 3 months of submission.

Instructions for Authors: We aim to publish an annual volume in January of each year. Submissions are considered on a rolling basis. But to be considered for publication in one year’s volume the paper must be submitted by 31st July of the prior year. The guidelines for submission are as follows:

  • Submit your paper to ijae@ramanujan.du.ac.in.
  • The paper should not have been published previously in any form.
  • The paper should not be under consideration for publication elsewhere.
  • All submissions to IJAE are double-blind refereed. (Neither authors nor do referees have their identities disclosed to the other.)
  • A paper may be rejected without refereeing if it is not found to be suitable for the journal by the editorial team.
  • Suitable papers may be on any issue in any Applied Ethical field including Business Ethics, Environmental Ethics, Ethics of Education, Ethics of Technology, Media Ethics, Medical Ethics, Research Ethics, and Ethical considerations in Social, Political, Legal, and Public Policy matters, etc.
  • Papers may not simply constitute a review of existing literature, but should look to advance an original position.
  • Papers should be between 3000-6000 words.
  • All submissions must be in RTF or Word formats.
  • All submissions should include an abstract of no more than 200 words.
  • Papers should be prepared for anonymous review, that is at no point in the paper should there be any author identifying information present.
  • A separate cover letter with the following author identifying information is required to be submitted in RTF or Word formats: name, paper title, institutional affiliation, and contact information.
  • Only one submission per author will be considered at any given time. If you wish to submit more than one papers you should wait for the decision on the prior paper before submitting the next one.

GUIDELINES FOR REVIEWERS

On receipt of the manuscript, you the reviewer should do three things immediately.

  1. Read the editor’s e-mail and determine whether you can complete the review in the Due Date, usually in 2 to 3 weeks.
  2. Quickly skim the relevant portions of the manuscript and verify that it fits within the scope of the journal.
  3. Mail us your confirmation that you “Accept to do the review”, otherwise you can mail us by writing “Unable to do the review.”

If you have either a time problem or a conflict of interest, contact the editor for instructions. S/he may extend your deadline; ask whether there is a colleague at your institution who could do the review, or ask you to return the manuscript to her/him for reassignment (and, if possible, for you to provide the names and addresses of other reviewers who are competent to handle the subject matter). If your cursory examination reveals that the manuscript does not fit within the scope of the journal, contact the editor for instructions.

This is double-blind review process, which Ramanujan College follows for the review of articles for IJAE, therefore neither you nor the author would know each other and their affiliations.

This submission is a privileged communication. Please do not show it to anyone or discuss it, except to solicit assistance with a technical point. If you feel a colleague is more qualified than you to review the paper, do not pass the manuscript on to that person without first requesting permission to do so. Your review and your recommendation should also be considered confidential.

In your comments intended for the author, do not make statements about the acceptability of a paper (see the next paragraph); suggested revisions should be stated as such and not expressed as conditions of acceptance. Organise your typed review so that an introductory paragraph summarises the major findings of the article, gives your overall impression of the paper, and highlights the major shortcomings. Criticism should be presented dispassionately; offensive remarks are not acceptable. You must mail us your comments and recommendations regarding the submission.

You can also send confidential remarks directed to the editor. Advise the editor of your recommendation for acceptance, modification, or rejection by checking the review form at the appropriate places. The final decision regarding modification, acceptance, or rejection of a manuscript rests solely with the editor, so do not state your recommendation in the portion of the review that will be sent to the author.

It is recommended that you make a copy of the review for your files. The manuscript may be returned to you for a second review, particularly if the requested modification was extensive. In addition, if the manuscript is resubmitted after rejection, the new version may be sent to you for review. In either case, you will need to evaluate the author’s responses to your original criticisms.

After completing your review, transmit your comments via e-mail. If so requested by the editor, return the original manuscript, including illustrations, to the editor; otherwise, please destroy it.

Your evaluation will play a major role in the editor decision as to whether to accept a submission for publication. We place a great deal of trust in you. We trust you to be prompt, fair, and to review the submission carefully and in depth. At the same time, we are very grateful for the time and effort you invest in the review process.

  1. Code of Ethics for Journal Editors
  2. General duties and responsibilities of editors

1.1. Editors are responsible for everything published in their journals.

This means the editors should

1.2. strive to meet the needs of readers and authors;

1.3. strive to constantly improve their journal;

1.4. have processes in place to assure the quality of the material they publish;

1.5. champion freedom of expression;

1.6. maintain the integrity of the academic record;

1.7. preclude business needs from compromising intellectual and ethical standards;

1.8. always be willing to publish corrections, clarifications, retractions and apologies when needed.

 Best Practice for Editors would include

  • Actively seeking the views of authors, readers, reviewers and editorial board members about ways of improving their journal’s processes
  • encouraging and being aware of research into peer review and publishing and reassessing their journal’s processes in the light of new findings
  • working to persuade their publisher to provide appropriate resources, guidance from experts (e.g. designers, lawyers)
  • supporting initiatives designed to reduce research and publication misconduct
  • supporting initiatives to educate researchers about publication ethics
  • assessing the effects of their journal policies on author and reviewer behaviour and revising policies, as required, to encourage responsible behaviour and discourage misconduct
  • ensuring that any press releases issued by their journal reflect the message of the reported article and put it into context

Code of Ethics for Authors

  • Avoid plagiarism at any cost; we have a strict policy to ward off any plagiarism. Manuscripts are sent to the reviewers only when the manuscript is devoid of plagiarised content.
  • Provide citation and referencing for each manuscript, giving credit to the authors and researchers to whom the idea originally belongs is a good practice and ethically prudent.
  • Do not submit manuscripts which have already been submitted or presented elsewhere, even if the manuscripts are in the process of review in a different journal.

Do not ask for the status of your manuscript submitted to us, this is a time-bound process and we value your patience and co-operation.
